Here's Chef Louie's twist on an all-American classic, the Sloppy Joe. A favorite of kids of all ages, this sandwich made with flavorful meat sauce ladled over a toasted bun started appearing on American lunch counters and dinner tables during the Great Depression. It's still popular, and never better than when made from scratch with the best ground beef and our Glace de Viande.
Ingredients
-
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
-
1 large onion, diced
-
1 large green bell pepper, diced
-
4 cloves garlic, minced
-
2 1/4 pounds ground beef
-
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
-
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
-
1 1/2 tablespoons chile powder
-
2 1/2 cups tomato sauce
-
3/4 ounces Glace de Viande Gold® dissolved in 2 cups hot water
-
Salt and ground black pepper
-
Tabasco sauce
-
6 hamburger buns, split and toasted
Methods/Steps
Place a skillet over medium heat and add the vegetable oil. Stir in the onion and green pepper and cook until the vegetables soften, 5-6 minutes. Add the garlic and cook another minute. Add the beef, breaking it up with a spatula, and cook until the beef is browned, 7-10 minutes.
Add the dark brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, chile powder, tomato sauce, and diluted Glace de Viande Gold®. Increase the heat to bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring often, for 15-20 minutes.
Season to taste with salt and pepper and Tabasco sauce. To serve, ladle the meat sauce over the bottom half of each bun, then add the top half.
